Since the advent of Snake on early Nokia phones there has constantly been a question about what to do with your phone while you’re waiting. Whether you need to kill five minutes before an appointment or an hour riding home on the train, there are endless games to keep you satisfied. While quick and mindless games such as Candy Crush or Angry Birds are popular and can keep you on your toes for a few minutes, sometimes you want something more substantial. Now that we’re beyond the Nokia and onto more advanced phones like the Galaxy S6 Edge, we’ve got suggestions for new, better and more complex games to keep you occupied.
Strategy games can vary from fast-paced with many moving parts to slow where speed kills and the perfect move is the way to victory.
Plague Inc is one of the more insidious and complex games out there. You play as a yet undiscovered virus and your mission is to wipe out the human population. By picking mutations, you influence how you are spread, what weakness you have and how quickly the host starts to show symptoms. As humanity tries to figure out ways to stop you, you can continue to mutate in ways to avoid their defenses until the whole world is infected. Going with traits to make you more deadly may seem like a good idea in the beginning, but if you kill your host too quickly you don’t have a chance to continue to spread. This is a game where subtly can be much more deadly than brute force.
If tower defense games are more your style you can’t go wrong with Kingdom Rush Frontiers. Hold off the barbarian and demonic hordes in this cartoonish and easy-to-pick-up game. By watching and learning the weaknesses of your attackers you can make a better defense. Some enemies are vulnerable to arrows, others require magic or swords. Knowing what tower to make and when is crucial when trying to get past the later levels.
A mainstay of strategy games is the RPG or role playing game. While the phone form factor is not particularly well-suited for the action RPG they can excel with the turn-based variety. With these games it’s all about knowing when to attack or when to defend. Do you take out the strongest enemy first or defeat the minions allowing you to concentrate on the boss at the end.
The Final Fantasy series is legendary among the gaming community. Few franchises have been so popular and stuck around as long as Square Enix’s flagship game. Luckily for these fantasy RPG geeks, Square Enix has ported over several of their Final Fantasy games over into the Play Store. They are a bit pricey but any fan of Final Fantasy or RPG genre knows that it’s money well spent. Turn-based RPGs lets each player plan out how their turn is going before letting the motions play through.
Puzzles are another great way to pass time, and the genre is so varied that everyone is sure to find something they like.
Games like 2048 are a quick and easy way to get into this genre. 2048 starts with blocks with numbers on them, you have to swipe the blocks toward each other. If two blocks with the same number connect a new block will be formed with the sum of the numbers. The goal is to get to 2048 before you fill the grid, sounds simple enough but this can be a deceptively tricky puzzle. Have a few high number blocks floating around and they start to take up valuable space, swipe the wrong way and suddenly a whole row or column is filled and it won’t move properly. Finding the balance between getting the larger numbers and making sure that the board doesn’t get full is the way this addicting game hooks you.
