Smart mobiles have become the order of the day. More than three fourths of the world use smart phones. It is observed that people prefer Android operated devices to other operating systems. This is due to the fact that the Android system is more user-friendly. Anyone who has used a smart phone would have set up a wall paper of their choice. It is said that the people who own smart phones are naturally smart. Ask any person who has used a smart phone about Carl Kleiner’s abstract wallpapers and the answer would be an emphatic “Yes”. One aspect you might not know is that these compositions are not made digitally but are designed, crafted photographs. Kleiner’s work is similar to the early material studies created by Google design while they were developing the Material Design. This was particularly noticeable during the process of developing iconography and showcasing natural shadows with particular emphasis on realistic depth with three dimensional objects. While introducing Material Design, they had entrusted Kleiner with creating three pieces called “paperscapes”. Multiple paper types were used to create the pieces and were released with the Material Design guidelines.
The same technique was employed for the hero image as well as for the photographic set for Lollipop. New technology demands new designs and hence Kleiner was again called up to create a new set for Android Marshmallow which was thrown open to the public on October 5th, 2015. Marshmallow does not rely on bold color shifts but uses subtle shifts in tone and texture. Subtlety and sophistication was the keywords used by Kleiner when choosing the surfaces to work with. According to Kleiner, the end result should have an organic touch and a graphic composition which would be possible only if he used painted surfaces with colored pigment powders and floating ink. Google had its own brand colors to work with. Kleiner had to maintain the mathematical precision of the original paperscapes. At the same time, he intended to make the geometry a bit more complex and hence he decreased the scale a bit. To give it a three dimensional effect, troughs were created using colored water. In the same way grainy powders were used to suggest pixelation.Google’s aim was to create a robust and thoughtful visual language. Hence imagery was given equal importance on a same level as that of the graphic UX elements.
Google considers its clients to be blessed with powers of intuition to understand their products. This intuition would enable them to understand that every practical detail has been looked into while creating these exquisite wallpaper designs. Thus the bridge between the Material Design system and the new designs for Marshmallow has been constructed through the sheer artistry of Kleiner’s abstract photography. Without compromising with the spirit of the Material Design, a new dimension of interest has been added through the use of different artistic disciplines. The beauty of Kleiner’s photography is that they artfully blur the boundaries between illustration, photography and design and this exemplifies the signature of Carl Kleiner.
