Twitter’s latest update lets easily you communicate with people you may not know in real life. The popular social networking site added a direct message feature which can be used to communicate with anyone active on the 140 character social platform. In old times you had to make the other person follow you first if you want to talk to him/her via Twitter’s direct message services. With the changes made today by the social site now you can send messages to any one without barriers. But actually is there a requirement of such a service as why would anyone want to receive a DM when he is already pissed off with the Facebook and other sites spam messages. The amendment can be beneficial for business and service platforms though as now you can appreciate any service or local business easily via Twitter or even send a complaint if you find that they are more active on twitter than on regular e mails. For individuals it can act as an invitation to 140 character spam.
There are many other issues related to it just for the case Nicole Lee, senior editor at Engadget tweeted, “If you’re wondering why I’m not allowing DMs from anyone, it’s because I’m a woman on the internet.” Which in many ways makes sense and may be the opinion of many other women’s out there as having an option to message just about anyone will flood their inboxes with spam’s and many other irritating messages. Twitter has always been bad in handling the spam’s, abuses and trolls on the platform which was proved by a leaked internal message of Twitter’s CEO Dick Costlo. However there is an option to disable the new function and in order to do that you just need to follow few simple steps.
Visit your twitter home page.
Click on your profile picture which is present on the upper right side of the page.
Go to the settings option and click on security and privacy option from the menu on the left hand side.
Scroll to the bottom of the screen and disable the “Receive Direct Messages from anyone” option by just avoiding the tick in the box.
The users which have been blocked by you won’t be able to directly message you even if you chose the option of allowing anyone to message you. If you delete any direct message conversation then the threads are deleted only from your account the other person can still read the chat. The same is the case in group conversations also. This is the third major update by Twitter this year as they previously released group messaging option and 30 second video feature in January. However the company also added a language translation feature to its mobile applications.
Twitter growth rates have seriously dropped in the last quarters and are still losing money with this sluggish approach. The company lost $125 million in the last quarter which is about 20 percent of the shares. The latest changes are meant to bring momentum to the revenues of the company. However the firm refuses to ever offer services like official as product for DM at least for now.
